Quotes

i've always been a quote lovin kind of gal,
so today for "We Encourage" Tuesday,
I thought I'd do a post on some, I repeat, some of my favorites.
i would need to continue to do quote posts forever to fulfill
my favorites and my love for them.

if you've been reading my blog for any amount of time, you'll quickly learn that i adore, ah-dore
this man, henri nouwen. he was smart, had a good sense of humor, and loved God like no one I've ever come across. and he's changed my life perspective. (he inspired my "Beloved" tattoo)

i've read several of his books, watch his sermons and am a part of the henri nouwen society.

“As long as we continue to live as if we are what we do, what we have, and what other people think about us, we will remain filled with judgments, opinions, evaluations, and condemnations. We will remain addicted to putting people and things in their "right" place.”

“A waiting person is a patient person. The word patience means the willingness to stay where we are and live the situation out to the full in the belief that something hidden there will manifest itself to us.”

“You don't think your way into a new kind of living. You live your way into a new kind of thinking.”

“Becoming the beloved is pulling the truth revealed to me from above down into the ordinariness of what I am, in fact, thinking of, talking about and doing from hour to hour.”

another great writer, author and speaker i love is C.S. Lewis. if you've never seen the movie Shadowlands, i highly recommend it, it's about a piece of his life.
i've read a few of his books too. i like this picture of him b/c he's smiling, and he didn't do that a lot.

“Friendship is born at that moment when one person says to another: "What! You too? I thought I was the only one.”

“We read to know that we are not alone.”

“To love at all is to be vulnerable. Love anything and your heart will be wrung and possibly broken. If you want to make sure of keeping it intact you must give it to no one, not even an animal. Wrap it carefully round with hobbies and little luxuries; avoid all entanglements. Lock it up safe in the casket or coffin of your selfishness. But in that casket, safe, dark, motionless, airless, it will change. It will not be broken; it will become unbreakable, impenetrable, irredeemable. To love is to be vulnerable.”

If we find ourselves with a desire that nothing in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that we were made for another world.”

“I pray because I can't help myself. I pray because I'm helpless. I pray because the need flows out of me all the time- waking and sleeping. It doesn't change God- it changes me.”

“God can't give us peace and happiness apart from Himself because there is no such thing.”

everyone loves them some mother theresa!

“I have found the paradox, that if you love until it hurts, there can be no more hurt, only more love.”

“If you judge people, you have no time to love them.”

i almost feel like thomas merton is a good friend of mine (henri too)
“If you want to identify me, ask me not where I live, or what I like to eat, or how I comb my hair, but ask me what I am living for, in detail, ask me what I think is keeping me from living fully for the thing I want to live for.”  Thomas Merton
“Art enables us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time.” Thomas Merton
"Perpetual quietness of heart. It is to have no trouble. It is never to be fretted or vexed, irritable or sore; to wonder at nothing that is done to me, to feel nothing done against me.

It is to be at rest when nobody praises me, and when I am blamed or despised, it is to have a blessed home in myself where I can go in and shut the door and pray to my God in secret and be at peace, as in a deep sea of calmness, when all around and about is seeming trouble." Thomas Merton

Sometimes I want to ask God why He allows poverty, famine and injustice in the world,
but I'm afraid He may ask me the same question. Unknown

“Thank God for the things that I do not own.” St.Teresa of Avila
(i need a respirator for this one)
“For prayer is nothing else than being on terms of friendship with God.” St.Teresa of Avila
“You don't love someone because they're perfect, you love them in spite of the fact that they're not.”  Jodi Picoult, My Sister's Keeper
"If equal affection cannot be, let the more loving one be me."W.H. Auden

"A ton of head, ain't worth a ounce of heart."

"Walk through life without sharp edges."

"But let there be spaces in your togetherness
and let the winds of the heavens dance between you.
but make not a bond of love:
let it rather be a moving sea
between the shores of your souls."  Gibran

"What I wanted was to be loved for who I am, for who I was,
and for who I will be. I had to step into the heart of God to recieve that."
~~Normandi Ellis ~~

"What you seek is seeking you." Rumi

Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through experience of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, ambition inspired, and success achieved. -- Helen Keller

"love your enemies." Jesus

I love, love, love good quotes! I used to pick one for the day or week and write them in the employee lounge on the white board at work. I guess it was my way of "blogging" before there was such a thing. I love C.S. Lewis and own a lot of his books. Mother Theresa is also one of my favorites. Plato and Socrates were often featured for me. I love this idea. They can be so inspirational. Thank you for sharing these!

I am drawn to quotes too. Pinterest has introduced me to many new quotations. Although it is common, one of my favorites is, " Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle." Plato's words remind me not to take things too personally.
